Riot’s MMO Project Resurfaces — Five Years In, First Real Footage
Riot’s long-rumored MMO surfaced at the studio’s internal Game Day showcase, and the first public-adjacent footage paints a much more concrete picture than five years of speculation produced.
The footage, which leaked through one attendee’s Discord and was quickly pulled, showed a classless skill-graph system reminiscent of FFXIV, region-based combat that varies between action and tab-target depending on environmental triggers, and a heavy emphasis on overland traversal rather than instanced dungeons. The League IP integration is light — recognizable Runeterra geography, but no champion cameos in the visible footage.
Riot’s official position remains that the project is ‘in production with a 2028+ launch window’ — which means another two-plus years of waiting. The leaked footage suggests the project is meaningfully further along than ‘pre-alpha’ messaging implied.
Riot MMO is real, classless, and genuinely Runeterra-flavored. 2028 still feels optimistic. Worth tracking; not worth holding your breath.
